    when chinese fails

Came across one article in which the author argued that though Chinese is beautiful and succinct in many a way, and he once disdained those whose Chinese were riddled with English words, dismissed such expression as being affected and ostentatious. But later he found himself doing exactly the same―and with good reason. Words such as Offer presentation and high-tech and high-touch seemed unlikely to be expressed in the same simple way, without compromising the rich connotation underneath.

And he is not alone, I guess, since I myself have the same problem sometimes to find the exact Chinese for a simple English word.

Here is another example, how to translate Commuter with less than 2 or 3 words?

I do not know if it is the failure of one language, or rather, the cultural difference that underlay those challenges for translators, or the inertia on the part of translators busying moving their hands down the pages to find a creative solution to words like I mentioned above and more such as pensioner, mobile pound, necessary evil, and enlightened interests?

These words may not be so typical but the abundance of such little hurdles along the path leading to a smooth Chinese delivery makes a good case for reflection.

balance, the art of a beautiful life

I got a good talk-to for my workaholic life, and I must admit everything I learnt was right, and true. None of those people who truly care about me would like to see me work to my bone, and Lily is much wiser—she thinks about that good idea, but she does not make that the only raison d’etre. Being a student for too long does leave a very bad habit, that I would feel so lost when I had nothing to do. But life is not all about work, I told myself being busy is to squeeze the last drop of life from one’s mind and heart. The creator of this Chinese word is just a genius. 忙=心+亡. :) I have been digging the database from CMMS and CTR, and did a small survey of Nanfang’s readership, dismal results, once again I belong to a small group.

the title to this chart: where are the readers gone

the other mag is about celebrities and social lights...

    take it or leave it

From adAge’s China sister web, FAST FACTWB put China as the forth largest economy, trailing US, Japan and Germany

Also Shanghai GM saw its corporate coffers jingle with coins from anxious buyers’ pockets in 2005. and the head of this company said this momentum would continue .

Also : 60% of graduates leaving universities this year will not be able to find jobs, according to a National Development and Reform Commission report--frightening news for the 4.13 million students completing their studies this year.

    http://adage.com/china/section.php?section_id=260

NDRC must scared day-dreamy college students with the fact that : 60% of graduates leaving universities this year will not be able to find jobs,

    as for this industry:

Between 2005 and 2008, six of the 10 largest contributors to advertising growth will be emerging markets including China, the seventh-largest ad market in 2005. China is expected to grow 66% over the coming three years, overtaking Italy in 2006, and France in 2008, becoming the fifth-largest market by 2008.
    Source: ZenithOptimedia

And if u fall into this category:

China has 17 million middle income households, defined as those with monthly salaries worth $622-$1,244 (5,000 to 10,000 RMB), accounting for 50 million people, or 3.8% of the total population.

And again ladies see if u fit in this one:

women spend about $74 (600 RMB) on cosmetic and skin care products per visit, two or three times per year.
Source: National Bureau of Statistics, China Daily, McCann Worldgroup

China's ad spend up 21% in 2005. this title speaks a lot.

And the last one is for those who haven’t decided yet to learn this pictographic language or not:

One in four people globally, including China's population, will be able to speak Mandarin fluently by year 2007. Over 30 million people around the world now take Mandarin courses at 2,500 universities in 100 countries.
Sources: Borneo Bulletin, U.S. Census Bureau

Conclusion: figures do not tell the whole story, but one can certainly get some good laugh from them.

    a day on the ranch

the ranch has a funny name, goose and duck. not a bad place, esp the little cabin is lovely, and quite a lot of play items, like horse riding, archary, go-cart, etc, though the facilities are at poor maintance, but i should not be too critical.
it is not so much fun, since till now as a new comer in probation, i am not involved, and i am never social enough to feel i could be enthusatic. so while the bonfire was raging(it is weird to have bonfire in summer, isn't it) i was sitting in another end of the small square talking, or rather, arguing with the VP who is returning back to his home country soon, who stressed that there is no truth, which is actually a paradox: that assertion itself is an absolute which may be wrong.
well, A1 is not a bad channel, and i watched a documentary about a brave man trekking Aussie alone , and the sad thing is that his endearing dog died before he reached the destination.
i also felt i could cry when i heard him sob holding the hardened body.

    so it goes

    The bouquet is beautiful.

A colleague commented before I even got a clear view of those roses. That fragrance will be there for one week, the delivery girl told me when I asked.

My father’s deferred dream- the Great Wall and the Summer Palace, and the moment when I put on the gown—that made all the aches, pain, and labor worthwhile.

My mother is aging fast- and it hurt me to see her so weak and vulnerable, and still I could not convince her not to self-medicate and I could not go with her to hospital until this Saturday.

Still at sea as what I will do, but gather ye rosebud when ye may. And I will see what I will do in time.
